Once: A New Musical

Whenever I'm in London, I make sure that I don't miss to watch a musical.  And this year there were so many musicals to watch, but such little time... Actually... little budget. I can watch musicals all week long as they show them every night here.

First stop.
Once: A New Musical

So here's a bit of a background of the musical.  It was based on an Irish film shown last 2006.  The movie won Best Original Song for the American Academy Award 2007 for the song "Falling Softly" written by the same actor and actress of the movie itself Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.  The musical, on the other hand, first premiered in broadway last 2012 and has won 9 Tony Awards 2012 including Best Musical.  The musical just opened in London's West End just last April 2013.

As for the plot, it's set in Dublin, where Guy (the main character) is a busker/street performer meets Girl, a Czech, in a pub. Girl loved his music and approaches Guy and asked questions about his songs and learned that his songs were written for his girlfriend who broke up with him and moved to New York.  And the story picks up from there.

"I had experienced that in my own life in a way that you can be a total stranger to somebody, and they can be a stranger to you, and yet when you start playing music together... There's something that happens where it's almost life your souls merge...   -Marketa Irglova"

They eventually sing "Falling Slowly" together.  More of the plot in Wikipedia. I don't want to spoil you guys. :P

My Thoughts.

I wasn't really plan of seeing this musical as I have other musicals to watch in mind but when I saw the posters with good reviews of the musical along the Undergound stations I decided that this was a musical not to miss.

The set of the musical was very interactive.  As soon as you enter the main theatre, you will see that the stage was set up in a way of a regular pub here in the UK.  They were serving/selling drinks. You can go up the stage and buy drinks.  And as the show was going to start, this group of musicians entered the stage just started singing and playing their instruments just like in a regular pub.  And it looked so much fun!  When the actual show was about to start, they slowly escorted the audience back to their seats.  To my surprise, the musicians were the actual ensemble of the musical and the main character was with them too.   And yeah, the ensemble were also the orchestra.  The musical was played acoustically by them. It felt like I was watching an acoustic concert!

The musical itself was not your typical musical, the set itself was unchanged all through out. So the magic of each scene was just the lighting and the always changing setting of the tables and chairs on the stage.

The ending... was very heavy on the heart.  The ambience of the entire theatre was quiet and you can really feel that it made us feel very heavy.  Yes, there are endings that are not happy.
